Project Objective Jenny Price¡¯s article, ¡°Looking for Nature at the Mall¡± investigates how The Nature Company Store reflects contemporary attitudes about Nature. Through a close examination of the company¡¯s products, locations, and motivations she probes the relationship between middle- class Americans and the natural world in the 1980s and 90s. She suggests that the artificial world of the shopping mall has been matched by the simulated version of nature that is offered for sale within the carefully constructed environment of the store. In this assignment I am asking you to do a similar close examination of some aspect of contemporary culture to investigate current attitudes about nature, the city, and the relationship between the two. In other words, I want you to think about how contemporary society relates to nature, and how that relationship is shown in the stories that we see all around us ¨C in media, film, on TV, in advertising, music/lyrics, novels, cartoons, social media etc. Project Requirements Choose some version of contemporary media in which you can examine concepts and attitudes about nature and culture. Examine your medium closely, looking for meaning. Develop a theme or argument about what you find. Use your analysis of your chosen medium to back up and support your argument in a written statement. Specifics: 1. Provide images, links, video clips, or other materials that illustrate the medium you chose and the specific items you were examining. 2. Describe, Analyze and Interpret your findings in a 4-5 page, typed, hardcopy statement Advice: Although collecting, viewing and analyzing images or other materials can be more entertaining than writing about them, I would suggest dividing your time so that you are spending 1/3 of your time on the assignment on collecting and viewing images and 2/3 of your time on the writing process.

Nature and the City
Modern society and nature and man and nature appear to be relatively distinct challenges, although this is not the case. To a particular degree, the challenge of the association between the people and nature is the challenge of that between people and community since the societal association among individuals is established upon their re-creating of nature. Equally, the association that connects people to a society offers them always superior power for the task of re-creating nature. Several disagreements in contemporary society, through the TVs, novels among other mass mediums; have occurred due to the lack of knowledge of the dialectical association between human beings and Nature on one side and human beings and the society on the other side. The greater the degree of growth of man civilization, the more important the dialectical association becomes. Therefore, the pair of matters is both similar and distinct. Dialectical association is an extremely wide expression; it is applied with connection to the merger of the natural sciences and the societal sciences (Dahms 47).

In handling the challenge of the merger of these pair of sciences, people should initially appreciate the scientific condition of social studies, if not so, there might be no question of the going back natural sciences. Nevertheless, despite that the challenge of this association has been halfway resolved, in its heart it stays unresolved. The major factor to the resolution of the challenge lies in the association between theme and object.
