In this folder, you will find a PDF copy of Working, by Studs Terkel. We have already read “Dolores Dante” from this book. This book is an oral history of working people talking about their jobs. The book was published in 1974. Most of the pieces are about 3 to 5 pages long.
Your assignment is to choose one of the stories and analyze it in one of the following ways:
1. Compare and contrast
You can compare the representation of the job in one of the stories to the representation of the same job in one of the readings or videos. For example, you could compare one of the stories of a farmer to “Under the Lion’s Paw.”
2. Thematic Analysis
You can identify a particular theme we have been discussing in the course and analyze a story in Working in terms of one of those themes. Some things we have been talking about: Protestant Ethic, Nostalgia for Agrarian Society, Worker Resistance, Immigration, Low-Wage Work, Time/Clockwatching as a Central Part of Work, Workplace Safety.
3. Oral History
Choose one of the stories and interview someone in the same kind of job. Then compare what they said to what the worker in the story said. How do they see their jobs similarly? How do they see them differently? Be sure to include some quotes from the interview.

Introduction
Low-wage work is a significant element of the labor market and a divisive subject in many states. The eminence of low-paid works and whether they are helpful to employees or the community is an open topic. The response depends on whether low-paid work leads to recurring joblessness, whether low-paid employment results in better-paying jobs, and whether low-paid works are temporary. Although empirical evidence related to low-paid work is mixed, Enid Du Bois story regarding work indicate that low-paid work is better than having no job, serves as a stepping stone, and can be used as an indicator of low productivity by employers.
Low-paid work is better than having no job
People who engage in low-paid work are characterized by the fear of having no job at all. In Enid Du Bois story, new employees worked for long hours yet “the salary was only $1.60 an hour” (Terkel 184). The situation was very bad that Eni Du Bois used illness as an excuse to skip work. However, she could not stay at home the whole day because “[she] didn’t have any other means of employment” (Terkel 187). Continuously engaging in low-paid work averts scarring consequences of joblessness that could lead to lasting tribulations for workers. This is an international problem that numerous workers, especially those who engage in sales and marketing, have to deal with. In the case of Enid Du Bois, engaging in a low-paid work was better than being unemployed.
