Organic foodstuffs consist of animal and crop products that are free from any form of chemical additive, chemical processing or even ripening through radiation. Such foods are produced organically by use of chemical free inputs such as manure instead of inorganic fertilizers. Pesticides can be allowed if only they do not contain synthetics. Unlike in the production of inorganic food, production of organic foodstuffs involves controlling of weeds through mechanical means such as uprooting, contrary to spraying of chemicals. Even though the organic food has benefits to human health, however, it also associated with some harmful effects on human well-being. Precisely, the majority of consumers do not have knowledge concerning the best foodstuffs to consume. Based on above facts, this paper will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of consuming organic food. Similarly, it will establish heath benefits associated with consumption of organic food.
First, organic foodstuffs are free from unnecessary chemicals which may be harmful to the body. Despite the minimal difference in nutrient content between organic and inorganic foodstuffs, however, nutritionists recommend the consumption of organic food. Organic foodstuffs are recommended based on their mode of production. These foods are more palatable and nutritious since they are naturally produced without the use of chemicals. In other words, eating organic has got limited risks of infection associated with synthetic pesticides.
Secondly, eating organic is preferred since such foods are more palatable than eating inorganic. In comparison with the inorganic foods, the organic foods are sweet based on its natural production. There is no chemical alteration of their natural tastes, and aroma. The recent scientific debate established that organic foods retain natural minerals that enhance their flavor and aroma. Regarding the palatability, eating organic is ultimately better than consuming inorganic or genetically modified foods.
The consumption of organic food is associated with better and improved immunity. Though the health benefits of consuming genetically modified crops have not been established, however, genetically modified animal products have been determined to have serious complication on human health. For instance, sexual dysfunctions, as well as increased birth mortalities, are among the health complication associated with genetically modified animal products. There is improved health status, and immunity, which is associated with eating organic. Finally, Organic foods like sea fish are high in omega 3 fatty acid, vital nutrients responsible for brain development as well boosting the immune system.
Eating organic is said to enhance conscience. Based on the religion and food anthropology, production and consumption of organic food are healthy and culturally supported. However, preparation of inorganic food is unethical in some traditions and harmful to the entire environment. Religious consumers of organic have strong and clear conscious of eating the right meal compared to other foodstuffs (Frostling-Henningsson, et al. pp. 872). In some religion and culture, eating inorganic is harmful to the body as well as the soul. Such foods may comprise their faith and beliefs.
Organic foods are also preferred since they have low nitrate levels. The production of organic foods is healthy and free from unnecessary chemicals. Excessive consumption of nitrates is associated with different types of cancer as well as a medical condition in children that affect their bodies' ability to carry oxygen. It is the reason why children are recommended to eat organic as opposed to inorganic food.
Eating organic may lowers the chemical residues as well as resistant bacteria. There is reduced exposure to chemical residues such as cadmium and other toxic metals that may occur from the use of inorganic fertilizer in the production. Accumulation of resistant bacteria in the human body may prove to be harmful to human wellbeing. Dietitians have established that this condition may be corrected through the consumption of organic food.
Eating organic is also preferred since they have higher antioxidant effects on the body than inorganic. The antioxidant is necessary for the purification of the blood and the proper functioning of the heart. The consumption of organic food is, therefore, necessary for the prevention of the various coronary conditions such as stroke, atherosclerosis, and cancer.
Eating organic food is considered cheap based on the economic perspectives. Even though organic foods are expensive at the initial purchase, this cost tends to be lower in the long run when compared to the consumption of inorganic food (Bradbury, K. E., et al. pp. 2321) The fact that the hospital costs are significantly reduced due to improved health status of the consumer is vital. Eating organic is, therefore, cheap to the consumers than the inorganic foods which have high risks of disease infection.
The production of organic food is environmentally friendly thus it is safe...
