There is a difference between "discipline" and "corporal punishment". In the strict sense of the word, discipline means to instruct or to teach, with the aims of helping a child to learn self control. But why is it that the kind of discipline that parents know how well to exercise on their children is usually the corporal punishment? Studies show that at least 90 percent of parents punish their children in a way that inflicts some physical pain. For all that it is, parents should not spank their children, most immediately because there are other alternatives of disciplining the children. Secondly, spanking sends the wrong message to the child which should not be the rationale behind it. Thirdly, spanking can cause some undesirable and regrettable long term effects.
Positive parenting is the one that considers alternatives to physical discipline. It begins with the parent being a positive role model in accordance with the way they want their children to behave. They should also set rules and consequences. The rules should fai...
