Introduction
Short stories are characterized with literature in brief expressed in a narrative writing style, in the traditional setup, short stories were in form of storytelling that was oral. This paper identifies with three short stories namely; “The Yellow Wallpaper by Gilman”, “A Rose for Emily by Faulkner” and the “Girl by Jamaica Kincaid”. Findings have shown that the short stories have focused in a particular incident with the main purpose of evoking a mood or a particular effect. Inanimate objects have been used in emphasizing the themes of the short stories.
“The Yellow Wallpaper”
Charlotte Perkins Gilman, the author of this short story has been involved in fighting for the rights of the women; she has been referred to as the feminist intellectual and a crusading journalist. The inanimate objects used in the short story are Walls and Furniture; Jane disliked the yellow wallpaper showing that the short story is very critical on social injustice and on political inequality. The short story emphasized on the presence of unequal status in marriage institutions on the part of women, she continued to assert that women are destroyed by their desire for corrections in restricting self expression. Gilman in the short story gave a real life experience in 1886 while she was engaged in her first marriage; she was depressed due to misery living as a woman in this world. The main themes are women subordination in marriages, value of self expression in women and resting cure evils.
