1 What does the term officer ship mean
Officer ship is the authority commissioned in a position and which is entitled to someone. Also carrying out of the duties and responsibility entitled to an officer. The person entitled to that position is known as an officer. An officer is a member in the Armed Forces holding a position of rank or authority over the noncommissioned officers. He derives authority from sovereign state powers or the constitution of the land. Hence entitled to carry out the duties and respontsibility commissioned on them by the position. ROTC officers undergo through training such as leadership and management. This training is specific military occupational specialist or functional. This equips the officer with the knowledge of the position and how to carry out duties and responsibilities. For someone to become an officer he or she must meet certain qualifications such as having a university degree or being promoted from one to another before being a captain. There are three types of officers; the noncommissioned, warrant and commissioned. The noncommissioned officers are the backbone of the Armed Forces. They are the ones to carry out the orders of the commissioned officers. The warrant officers are the technical specialist in their own fields such as medical, physics, clergy and mechanical. Warrant officers range from the warrant officer 1 to the chief warrant officer 5. The commissioned officers get appointment from the president of the United State of America. They are in charge of units such as the platoons, companies and battalions. Commissioned officers range from the second lieutenant to the Major General.
2. Why is the command culture important? How do you establish it?
Command culture creates cultural awareness and foreign language master. Different cultures and intensified foreign language study helps the commissioned officers to be equipped with the right blend of culture and language skills required to support their global operations. Officers acquire these skills by being deployed to different countries in the world where they face different lifestyles, economic standing and world perspectives. They become more concerned in the humanitarian services, host nation military to military services and education on the social, cultural, and historical aspect of the host country.
Command culture is thus important where the officers are sent by the state in other countries for security matters. This requires them to be familiar with lifestyle, language and culture of that particular country to carry out operations well and efficiently. Most of the institutions such as college of engineering, nursing, economics or technology do not offer the foreign language course which is essential in culture awareness. Thus culture command is established where officers are deployed to other countries for them to acquire these skills. Cadet command program is implemented to facilitate participation from any and all institutions. The deployment last for period of one month and there is the five days readiness of the officers for the deployment. They travel in small groups led by senior leader cadre. The positions are competitive as they take into considerations the GPA, physical fitness, essay and other pertinent selective criteria. 3. Describe be, know, and do which attribute is most important? Why?
In Army, leadership starts with what one wants to BE. A leader must acquire the values, attributes, experience and skills which shapes a leaders character. The basic attributes to shape a leader emphasize on self-discipline, responsibility, integrity and confidence. This attribute are learnt in classes, during summer leadership development assessment course and in field during training exercise. A leader in the military is supposed to be well shaped to carry out authority entitled on him in an efficient manner.
