Although alternative medicine faces criticism and skepticism within the realm of Western and traditional medicine, its holistic approach has gathered significant attention and respect for aligning with individual beliefs, values, and philosophical orientations toward health and life (Tabish, 7). Alternative medicine comes in numerous forms ranging from acupuncture to herbal remedies. Embracing them can lead to breakthroughs in individual health and well-being because alternative medicine offers valuable natural remedy approaches to traditional healthcare.
Firstly, alternative medicine focuses on holistic health and wellness. Studies show that alternative medicine takes a holistic approach to health, perceiving the body as a complex system where physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional well-being are interrelated (Vinker, p. 2). It seeks to treat health problems holistically by examining their underlying causes. This approach is based on a whole-person focus, including their physical, spiritual, emotional, and mental health. It considers the entire person–the body, mind, and spirit, focusing on curing the condition completely instead of just targeting the symptoms of a specific ailment (Akter, p. 5). This approach can lead to a more comprehensive and effective treatment plan. Practitioners also emphasize the use of natural remedies and therapies, arguing that they have no side effects compared to pharmaceutical drugs. Indeed, alternative medicine promotes natural remedies that have minimal side effects.
