Green card holders and U.S. citizens can permanently reside in the United States lawfully. However, there are benefits of U.S. citizenship that green card holders don’t enjoy. Obtaining lawful permanent residence via the green card is usually the necessary first step for a person immigrating to the U.S. There are various ways in which people can get a green card such as winning the diversity visa lottery, receiving refugee status or asylum, or sponsorship by a spouse, close family member or employer (Bray Ilona, 1). The responsibilities and benefits of a green card holder include applying for visas for a spouse and unmarried children, eligibility to receive social security funds and federal benefits, serving in certain branches of the military, and traveling outside the U.S. for a period not exceeding one year (FileRight, 1).
