Name: Course Code: Date: Good vs Evil Equality’s “sins” in the context of his society and how his sins reflect Ran and Foucault’s philosophies Equality is describing the sins he has and continues to commit in the society he lives in. After the Rebirth Revolution, no one can be alone or do an activity alone. He is also not supposed to pursue his own endeavors because that is promoting individualism and it trumps the societal objectives of collectivism. He goes on to do experiments alone in the tunnel and discovers electricity. He also falls in love with Liberty but their relationship is forbidden. He attempts to present his discovery to the scholars who overlook the ingenuity of his invention and try to enforce societal rules and want him hanged. Throughout the novella, Ayn Rand seeks to promote the idea of objectivism and show that everyone is entitled to his/her individual happiness and the society should not stand in the path of that pursuit. What makes Equality happy is not necessarily what was making other people happy and he should not have been ostracized for his own pursuit of his endeavors and dreams. Rand shows that collectivism robs people off their happiness and stymies the pursuit of their dreams. She largely believes that no one is like any other person and the society should not compel the people to conform to pushing the societal agenda at the expense of their own goals and pursuit of happiness. She also encourages anyone to fight back the establishment like Equality that continues to suppress their dreams or go to the environment where their ideas are accepted and celebrated. Equality’s actions from the perspective of our society were not inherently wrong rather, they were revolutionary. He deserved praise, recognition and he should have been allowed to publish them. The structure of the society stymies individual pursuit of objectives that push the society forward. Rand is known for promoting objectivism and this book was a reflection of his philosophy about life. Foucault has similar ideas about what society thinks about the welfare of the individual. It seems uncivilized to continue violating the rights of another human while professing that it is what’s best for society.
