Metropolis was a film ahead of its time. To date, filmmakers still borrow heavily from Fritz Lang’s masterpiece. It brings to the fore a crucial aspect of human existence that every individual dreads; the future. Today is bright, but there is always a question of what tomorrow will look like. It is through bold filmmakers such as Lang that one gets to accept the harsh truth.
The opening scene of Metropolis is grim. Machines are running endlessly, the clock is ticking, and workers move in and out of the company with no heart. The mise en scene in this scene serves to correctly depict the kind of life presented by a future metropolis.
