A Research Paper on the Movie Titanic
Introduction
The legendary ship called Titanic has become so overly popular in the past years not only by reason of the movie franchise but also by the testimony and evidentiary proof of how it sunk in the abyss. Witness accounts were collated and combined to complete the script of the film. According to the research organization History that “Titanic was doomed from the moment it was created due to fatal flaws in the design, the walls separating the bulkheads only extended a few feet from the water line thus the water could pour in the compartments. Secondly the lifeboats carried were not equal to the number of passengers aboard.” Historical accounts and reports state that most of the passengers on the Titanic were high-ranking officials, wealthy owners of enterprises and corporations, celebrities, journalists and business owners. There have been many evaluation and reports stating that the movie is not a hundred percent accurate as to the facts of what really took place during the sinking of the Titanic. It has been told that the tragedy brought out the cowardice in others and bravery from some. “Thomas Andrews, the Chief designer of the ship, was witnessed to be seen last in the First Class smoking room staring intently at the ship painted on a frame at the wall, while others who died were known to have offered their seats to those who were weaker and more vulnerable” (History). Titanic finally sanked at 2:20 a.m. on the fateful day of April 15. Out of the almost three thousand plus passengers, only seven hundred five survived.
The movie grossed millions during its first week because primarily of the highly reputable stars Leonardo De Caprio and Kate Winslet. The tragedy was turned into a love story. There were numerous flaws in the movie but it is indeed expected because one cannot fully relive a past tragedy that happened many years ago. The facts in the movie are different from the facts in real life hence, a viewer must read and research documentary proof for verification at all times.
Five Inaccurate Events in the Film
The director and writer of the movie Titanic has tried to compress the events of the film in three hours time and in doing so had to short cut or change some of the events, exaggerate or lessen the time span of some just so it would fit within the three-hour time limit allowed in the movie house. The author Roberts A. noticed disparities in the film from the real life situation. Here are five of the few inaccurate events in the movie Titanic:
According to a researcher that the scene where Third Class Passengers were locked
below the deck was not true because there was no discrimination at that time when the Titanic sunk and everybody was given a chance to ride on the lifeboats. Hence, the movie exaggerated the scene and made it look that the Titanic was biased in the manner that the rich and wealthy were more favorable to the Captain and owner of the ship rather than the lives of the poor. This part of the movie was a clear divergence from what really happened in the future. (Roberts A.)
The Real life Molly Brown did not use such name in real life or during her existence.
This was explained in the U.K. History Channel where the biography of Margaret Brown was shown. This story was a Hollywood invention since the true to life Margaret Brown was never know to be Unsinkable or as Molly. (Roberts A.)
The water used to flood the ship in the movie was supposed to be dirtier and muddier. In
accordance to the NASA, ocean water has concentrations of various types of ocean life and in reality, ocean water looks murky and dark. However, in the movie, the water was crystal clear as Rose and Jack tried to wade through and escape. It also does not look cold as it is supposed to be considering the icebergs floating or the natural smoke as a result of the coldness of the water. (Roberts A.)
The movie showed that Jack and Rose were having difficulty breathing and were still
able to swim through or walk in the water for thirty minutes but scientific fact would prove that the temperature of the water was freezing which means that there are physiological effects of immersion in the freezing cold. According to Daniel Allen Butler's book, entitled: Unsinkable, the Full story of the RMS Titanic, the water was -2 degrees centigrade thus some of the people dropped dead within 15 to 30 minutes due to hypothermia and cold shock. (Roberts A.)
Last of the inaccurate event seen in the movie is that the ship was supposed to show
British Military traditions since the first officer named Will Murdoch was a proud military but in the movie he gave an American salute before shooting himself when the Titanic was known to be an English ship, with an English crew hence, Murdoch would have given a salute facing outward British style.
Right after the tragedy, a series of investigations took place whereby five distinct and separate boards of i...
