The narratives “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” and the “Story of an Hour” have embraced symbols and characters that enable the readers to understand their central themes. Metaphors and symbols are used to develop plot, theme, and character in deeper ways visually. Narrative writers create an exceptional metaphorical language and take different story telling techniques. Certain symbolic objects are placed at key scenes so as to enable development of plot character and theme. The use of images and contrasting of language provides an avenue for readers to reveal emotion in narratives. The readers are able to live the outside world and focus on the inner life of characters which depicts their image and behavior. This essay will explore the deeper meaning of using symbols and images to bring forth the theme and an in-depth understanding of narratives.
Foer’s novel is using images throughout as a recurrent literary technique. The images are connecting to remarkable ideas and themes, in addition to emotions and perspectives alluding to on prior pages. The picture of an elephant eye Oskar see when visiting a woman helps the reader to view the image in other pages while he is seeking clues regarding his father. Images are used to see through Oskar eye by the reader through being taken on numerous times of every day images (Foer). The images are able to connect the reader with the narrative which seems at some time confusing and disconnected.
The theme of grief is brought about by “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” since the statement can be attributed to mean to live Love ns grieve is the mist essential meaning. The novel lays the readers extension of the meaning of grief and the various changes one has to cope with such as family and how society view and treat those grieving. The journey of Oskar was to explore answers in an effort to unite people and lifting them out of their grief. All characters in this novel are grieving for loss of their loved ones. They are grieving for answers that can never be satisfied.
The grief in this novel is different from one another grappling for a meaning why their grief (Foer). It is thro ugh Oskar’s expedition that he is able to discover the depth of grief. This is witnessed when he watched Mr. Black cry to hear his own voice. The novel is using symbols and characters to depict grief as an instance of realization of loss and regrets of moments missed in addition to the memories that will never be made. On the other hand, grief has been used to how it unites humanity by offering reason to reach for others and help to find their own peace. This is depicted when Oskar’s own grief to solve his father’s mystery that he helps Mr. Black who could have continued living in the silent and lonely world he had created.
The heavy boots used in the novel is symbol used to show the feeling of grief by Oscar as he records that certain things gave him heavy boots (Brown and Penrod). The heavy boots is central to the novel since he gets them after the demise of his father. Moreover, his expedition to find answers about his father to lighten his feelings met with people who are in heavy boots too. Although meeting these people did not offer answers to his questions, the expedition allowed him to share his heavy boots with them and become a witness of their heavy boots also.
