Every country in the world has rules that govern its people. These rules are contained in the constitution, which outlines morals, dos, and don’ts within and beyond a country’s border. The security and justice departments are responsible for reinforcing the law in most countries. The people found breaking it are arrested or summoned to courts to answer to their crimes. Among the lawbreakers are children, who are often taken to juvenile prisons and courts. Juveniles are treated differently from adults when they are arrested, meaning their charge differs primarily from the adults’. Juveniles do not deserve to be charged as adults because it does not offer the opportunity for rehabilitation of the children, risks the safety of the juveniles while in adult prisons and reduces the options available for sentencing of the juveniles.
Charging a juvenile as an adult does not give them an opportunity for rehabilitation. Not all children grow up into hardened criminals. Charging them as adults means condemning them into long jail terms with fewer chances or reformation. In a Wisconsin case that involved two girls aged 12 accused of stabbing another girl in honor of the internet character “Slenderman,” the court decided to charge them as adults. One was sentenced to 25 years in prison, while the other was sentenced to 40 years (Regoli). Understanding that children’s brains fully develop when they hit around 20 years is the initial basis for not charging them as adults. Most of them commit crimes because their minds cannot make informed decisions, as they would when they are adults.
