Differences between those who are wealthy and those who are not
There is a great difference between the wealthy and the poor not only in terms of their living standards but also in terms of the way they interact and socialize with other people. Although the poor tend to struggle a lot as they work for the wealthy, they tend to be satisfied with little things that the rich consider minor. These social class differences have prevailed for long and still continue to do so in our modern society. Whereas the wealthy are in pursuit of more wealth, the poor mostly worry about little things like how where to sleep and what to eat. On the other hand, the rich seem more worried about luxury things and how their families will appear before eyes of the society. To better explore this concept, this analysis will look at Rebecca Harding’s Life in the Iron-Mills, Harmlin Garland’s Under the Lion’s Paw and Gabrielo Muccino’s 2006 Pursuit of Happiness movie.
Unlike the wealthy, the poor mostly worry about their basic needs, what to eat, where to sleep (land, house etc). Harding depicts the struggles in the lifes of the poor iron mill workers who are not even guaranteed of clean air leave alone food at the end of the day. The environment around the iron-mills is not only polluted but even those who work there do not care much about their health. They are more worried about making their ends meet. This can well be illustrated by Deborah who when she arrives at her house, her only worry was about the leftover potatoes that she needed to eat. As Harding says,” It was the first food that had touched her lips since morning. There was enough of it, however: there is not always. She was hungry.” This is totally different from the conversation between the Council and Haskins. As the women go to lay children in bed, Haskins tells the Council that although he was perplexed by the empty land that he should have used for farming he had no money to buy it because the land dealers are selling “fifteen dollars an acre for bare land.” When Mrs. Council hears Haskin say that she jumps into the conversations saying how hard she had been working and how tired she was just because she can’t afford to hire someon...
