Research Proposal: Desegregation and Birmingham Church Bombing
Based on your reading of March: Book Two, I would like you to select a topic to explore in-depth for your research paper in this class. Your first assignment will be a Research Topic Proposal. You will need to choose a very specific and narrow topic. Some topics to consider:
-Any character/individual mentioned in the book (Emmett Till, Thurgood Marshall, Fred Gray, Ralph Abernathy, etc.)
-Any specific historical event in the book (lunch counter sit-ins, integration of southern colleges, Montgomery bus boycots, Looby house bombing, Birmingham church bombing)
-Major groups or themes in the book: Fellowship of Reconciliation, Social Gospel, family history, economic struggles.

Research Topic Proposal: Desegregation and Birmingham church bombing
The 16th Street Birmingham Baptist Church bombing highlighted the goring tensions among segregationists and integrationists in the American south. As the Civil Rights movement grew more prominent there was unease among segregationists. The bombing killed four black girls, but some of the perpetrators are still at large decades later.
There is a need to understand the role of the African Church in the lives of African Americans as a place of worship and a gathering point for demonstrators who agitated for end to racial discrimination. The response of public officials to the bombing especially the police is an issue that highlights how the power structures subverted, limited or enhanced the struggle for racial equality.
