Rhetorical Analysis of Cultural Baggage by Barbara Ehrenreich

Essay Instructions:

Cultural Baggage by Barbara Ehrenreich

Step 1- Paragraph 1 first audience, just briefly describe the audience . Your second audience is you. Briefly describe a relevant dominant quality. For example, are you a student-parent responsible for raising the next generation? A reflective, analytical reader who likes to ask questions? A member of the “never really thought about it, but now…” audience? These are just options. The last few sentences of this paragraph should be your thesis statement, in which you will contrast the article’s effects on the two audiences.

STEP 2: Paragraph 2 should begin with a topic sentence that states the effect on the first audience. Next, give a detailed discussion of the three quotations that best illustrate that effect. Do the following for each quotation:

State the quotation straight from the article. Don’t forget to use quotation marks and to give credit in the form of an in-text citation, like this (par. 4).

Restate the quotation in your own words to show that you understand it.

Explain how this quotation has this effect on the audience. Is it the content, the choice of words, or maybe an idea that is repeated? Explain. Does it seem like the author is appealing to the audience’s logic, emotions, or values? How can you tell? What seems to be the author’s attitude toward the audience? How do you imagine the reader reacting to this quotation? [This section will be much more detailed for the second audience in Paragraph 3.]

STEP 3: Paragraph 3 should begin with a topic sentence that states the effect on the second audience. Next, give a detailed discussion of the three quotations that best illustrate that effect. You can discuss the same three quotations or choose different ones. Apply the same three sub-steps as you applied to Paragraph 2. Include a detailed response to the quotation from your point of view as the second audience.

According to Barbara, cultural heritage and principles entail several factors apart from believing in one thing (Ehrenreich). Barbara, in her article, is addressing her first audience, which is very rich and has no more profound understanding of Barbara's point of argument. However, after an intimate conversation between them, the first audience understands the point. Through Barbara's context, I find myself being a student-parent responsible for raising the next generation. Barbara's article addresses the ethical practices that one needs to go through to be a responsible individual. Therefore, after going through her points, I have gained enough concepts that will enable me to guide the young ones to be more responsible. Besides, lack of heritage, religion, and tradition comes from forbearers, thereby making it a form of heritage(Ehrenreich).
The first audience was proud of her ethnic background and, on most occasions, enjoyed being a member of that society. Barbara is convinced of the importance of ethnic background and also admired having one, but the problem arises that she had none to embrace. Barbara's situation, therefore, had some effects on her first audience, who started to weigh whether ethnicity is genuinely something important in any society setup. For instanc...
