The use of social media is ubiquitous, and many Americans use Facebook, YouTube, Snapchat, Pinterest, Instagram, TikTok, Reddit, WhatsApp, Nextdoor, and Twitter. In reality, the Internet has become a favorite tool for individuals since they can communicate, chat with friends, call each other using videos, buy and sell goods, and transact using online payment platforms. According to a 2021 report by Pew Research Center, approximately 7 out of 10 Americans use any type of social media platform. The paper compares and contrasts YouTube and Facebook as the most widely used social media sites.
The use of YouTube has dominated the online landscape in the United States of America (USA), with the majority of Americans using this platform daily. In particular, the 2021 Pew Research Center survey shows that about 81% of American adults use YouTube (Auxier and Anderson 3). Although individuals have used this social media platform since it was created, significant growth started being experienced in 2019. From 2019 to 2021, the use of YouTube has increased by 8%. The majority of Americans aged 65 years and below admitted that they use YouTube as a video-sharing site (Auxier and Anderson 4). YouTube has helped many creative people to share their ideas, concepts, and opinions with others worldwide. Besides, some individuals make money from YouTube when they garner many subscribers. One of the ways YouTube generates revenues is through advertisements. Consequently, YouTube is one of the best video-sharing social media platforms in the 21st century.
