The Fate of Juveniles after Maturity
Juvenile courts began to avoid young criminals from getting stuck with adult court punishments. That was a brave move as juveniles were not mature enough to make critical judgments. All had to achieve the age of 17 to be adults, and face the same sentencing faced by adults. The separation of courts saw the rehabilitation and reformation of notorious youths. However, to some extent, it is questioned since some teens take advantage of that to commit serious crimes. That has led to the trial of some minors in the adult courts. Still, society’s security has to be maintained at all costs because peace is very important (Steinberg, 2001). This paper discusses the reasons to support and oppose juvenile courts and argues on one of the options that would lead to the delivery of justice while maintaining the rights of juveniles.
Society’s heed to the safety of the public remains at the peak. That is the reason for studies to support juvenile trials on murder be sentenced to life in adult prisons. The motion holds enough weight as a move to ensure the security of the community is not in jeopardy. Crimes like murder require more serious punishments. Juveniles committing such crimes should be treated as adults to keep society safe. Stopping the juvenile delinquencies has been a challenge which can only be solved by keeping the youths in juvenile prisons and reviewing their crimes when they attain the adult age of 18 years. With the increasing rate of crimes, the juvenile policy should be adjusted not only to consider immaturity but also to reexamine the circumstances under which there is a possibility of recurring offenses (Scott, & Steinberg, 2008). By doing so, the social welfare and cost of juvenile crimes will be well covered.
According to Collier (1998), an example like the Jonesboro shooting indicated that minors should serve at the same time as adults when they commit crimes. Laws should be made similar for all the states to ensure that juveniles who have been convicted of murder trials are sentenced to life in adult prisons. That will make controlling the youth crime rates easier than finding a specific solution for such a crime as murder (Collier, 1998). She argues that harsher punishments will convince a juvenile to change their mindset before committing a crime. These would influence behavior change and lower crime cases. A more stable judicial decision keeping in mind the issues of the minors that led to the crime commission are necessary.
If the state wishes to bring up responsible youths, the best way is to toughen them up by training them to abide by the rules and live right with others. Transferring juveniles who murder adult prisons will set an example for the state youths. Future youths will refrain from committing violent crimes. Robbery with violence or rape is grave crimes that should send juveniles to courts if found guilty. Adopting such a strategy aims at promoting equity in the state if the juvenile laws are reviewed. Trying teenagers who are at the age of 16 in juveniles could be a tricky undertaking as they are psychologically viable to make the right decisions.
