Colonial Relationships and Cultural Conflicts in “Tiger Hunt”
The nature of the relationship and friendship always denotes truth regarding society, especially under the pressure of colonialism. In Tiger Hunt, the authors Atsushi and Ochner establish a rather complex interdependence between a Japanese boy and his friend from Korea to unveil the political subtext of colonial power relations in Japan's rule over Korea. They could not be friends because their social positions belong to different strata; hence, it is imperative to consider the manners of their acquaintance.
While communicating, the boys feel cultural differences that appear even in their first meeting. While they spend time together and enjoy their friendship, she sees glimpses of his conflict between his position as a Korean living in Japan and a man of status during their visit to the Mitsukoshi Department Store and the sandstorms (Atsushi and Ochner).
