My Artistic Ethos Assignment: Mission Statement ART

Essay Instructions:

DUE: Monday, November 13th

For this third progression you will write a 2-page artistic mission statement that accounts for a particular project you're working on (or have already completed or plan to pursue) set against the backdrop of your general artistic ethos. What exactly do I mean by artistic ethos? Every artist has an agenda, be it political, cultural, aesthetic, or something else. Why do you create? Why do you believe in art as an effective means of communication? Do you wish to effect some kind of social change? Do you wish to innovate within a particular genre or discipline? Do you wish to create an escape from our current world? How does this particular project fit into your overall stance and practices? In other words, you must account for the micro and the macro and the relationship between them. You will read your statement to the class and will also share visual elements (not part of the 2-pages) in your presentation (sketches, images, sources of inspiration, etc.). So, find a visual component to add to this.

(I'll put a bit of my background & how to approach this in messages)

Browse through the artist statement links below for artist statement samples/tips if you need them or do some research on your own to see how artists you admire approach this sort of endeavor or simply use your own instincts. There's no one correct way to do this assignment. Ideally, your paper and your presentation should convey clearly what you value as a creator of art in 2017. You may incorporate outside sources into your paper (inspirational quotes, creative process theories, direct/indirect influences, etc.) but that's not a requirement.

Please follow standard formatting guidelines for the essay portion and bring two hard copies to class on Monday. Be as creative as you'd like with the supplemental material.

(Check messages to see what I'm interested in as an artist––to respond with my style & understanding)

About me: I'm interested in film, I want to pursue screenwriting. I create out of catharsis. I overthink/have anxiety/depression, constantly analyzing. It's therapeutic to get this onto a script. I like to humanize real-life situations people gloss over, movies such as American Honey, Florida Project, Me and You and Everyone We Know do this. My favorite films are very realistic––Drugstore Cowboy. My favorite director writes about slices of life––Harmony Korine. So I mostly like the humanistic independent film route. If you can incorporate this into the paper, that would be great. Message me if you have any questions :)

Please make sure the writer gets that message^ & please make sure this is completed on time. Make sure the writer is interested in the same stuff––film, existentialism, etc.

My Artistic Ethos
As an avid lover of the films and the entire filmmaking industry, I constantly find myself in a place where imagination meets reality. Particularly, I believe that script writing is an art, which represents a crossroad between the writer’s imagination and the entire spectrum of possibilities that lie before him. However, despite the degree of freedom that it offers, I’ve always been fascinated with films (and their scripts) showing aspects of humanism through real-life representations. Thus, in my journey towards being a scriptwriter, I’ve always sought inspiration from some of the best movies that I’ve ever watched in my life. Films like American Honey, Florida Project, Me and You and Everyone We Know, and Drugstore Cowboy has always been the bastions of my literary ethos as they focus on the principle of “agency”, or the idea a person is a free and responsible agent determining his own development through acts of the ‘will’.
I also believe that script writing is not merely an art nor a science. Rather, I’ve always viewed it as a form of catharsis, where it provides a sense of relief for the writers from the strong emotions and feelings that are welling deep inside their souls. Although it might sound a little vague, in ...
