Jennifer Government takes a critical look into hyper consumerism, with big corporations having influence on the economic system of countries. However, Barry’s attempt to paint American corporations as the face of unjust capitalism is a misrepresentation of the role of business in many countries. Even though, these corporations venture into other place because of business interests, it is not true that exploitation is equivalent to capitalism. They seem to suggest that capitalism is the cause of less political engagement in the world, but fails to acknowledge that most democratic societies follow capitalism.
Nonetheless, Jennifer Government shows the level of hyper consumption common in the 1980’s in America. Following, the election of President Ronald Reagan, there was renewed interest in conservative politics. Conservative politics typically calls for less government intrusion in the business sector which then leads to efficiency in the market. Business interests take center stage, with the decision to begin killing people on the streets who have Nike Mercurys which is a marketing plan to create interest in the product. To Max, violence is a sign that the system is wrong as it starts to equate everything with the market value where business people use tricks to increase profits.
