Television: history and influence on our daily life
History
Television is a major medium of information dissemination and news remission to the public. Approximately 90 percent of all households possess a television set. Everyone wants to be in the know (Ghimire and Arathi 2). People follow different forms of news and information. Some prefer following politics, others business news, while some are glued to the daily television programs. The evolution and invention of television undoubtedly changed the world. Televisions became available to the public from the early 40’s. However, its popularity began on a slow off. About 8000 households had access to television at the end of the Second World War. There were only black and white televisions with a few channels to watch at this time. There was so little focus on news. The programming was majorly entertainment. It was not possible to broadcast news programs that were consistently changing (Ghimire and Arathi 1-3).
A part from the internet, television was the most influential and greatest invention in the 20th century. The invention of television was met with skepticism of varying kinds. However, almost 75 years ago since its inception, United States has always been captivated. Today, according to Nielson Media Research and USA Today, there are more televisions more than there are people in average homes. In the past, television was a mere dream in the mind of inventors. Many inventors conceived ideas that basic concepts of sound transmission could be applied to transmission of pictures. People who contributed to the invention of television were Vladimir Zworykin, John Baird, Philo T. Farnsworth and Charles Jenkins. Each of these great men supplied a piece of the puzzle. The cathode ray tube that Zworykin used in the receiver is seen as primitive in the advancements of the modern television such as LCD, LED and Plasma. However, CRT is still sued today in television sets (Broach, Carter, Thomas, Page and Dale 50-54).
The evolution of television has been interesting since its commercial availability and inception in the late 30’s. The technology only changed drastically in the recent years. Television has gone through several technological advances over the years. The first television broadcast was seen in London in 1936. In 1954, the FCC authorized color television NTSC standard broadcast in America. There were a few television channels to select. The unlimited television channels available today seemed impossible and unrealistic. Majority of television sets could only offer up to four channels. Clear signals could only be received in larger cities. The signals could hardly pass through rural areas and mountains. Cable television was introduced to solve this problem in 1948. The primary role of the cable television was to ensure the broadcast signals reach the rural areas. There were community antennas placed on mountains and places of high elevation such as top of tall poles. Cable television has rapidly grown since its inception. There were nearly 700 systems of cable television by 1960. And at the end of 1971, about 2750 television cable systems were being used to serve about 6 million homes. By 1999, the number increased to over 65 million. Cable television was the only major television technology development in its early days (Ferguson et al. 473-476).
Today, cable television systems continually advance with new technological developments with television satellites. There are more than 80 television channels to be selected by cable subscribers. This includes 24 hour music channels, 24 hour news channels, 24 hour movie channels, and 24 hour sports channels. Nevertheless, service of pay television offer premium channels associated with cable television advancement. Pay television services offer several, different sports, original programming, and popular movies without any form of commercial interruption. The evolution of interaction television followed soon after this. Interaction television provided a two way communication between the end users and service providers. Soon after this, satellites for direct television broadcast were introduced to expand cable television system further. Prime Star and Direct TV are a few television companies that are associated with direct television broadcast satellites (Ferguson et al. 474-478).
From the above television advancements discussed, it is only obvious to anticipate a continuous advancement and evolution of television technologies. With the description of various television technological developments and advances, it is only appropriate to link them to how they have changed the societal influence and perceptions of the end users in the past years since inception. The major changes in television technologies form our cultures’ command center. It influences both children and adults uniquely (Russell, Antonia, Jensen and David 119-120).
