Images and figures constitute a significant part of the ideological representation of race, sex, and class in popular culture and films. The 1980s were dominated by films with a return-to-Vietnam theme. What characterized the 80s was Rambo and Reagan. The fundamental element of the ideological text of the Rambo movies was an emphases in the way in which the Reaganite ideology was transcoded. One of those series of movies was Rambo (1985) that started with the success of Uncommon Valor of 1983 which then saw three Chuck Norris Missing in Action films that spanned two years from 84 to 86. All those films followed on the same formula of showing the return to Vietnam by teams of former vets, or superheroes like Rambo on a mission to free a group of American soldiers "missing in action" who were being held captive by the Vietnamese since the war. In the fictional world that defined the 1980s film, violence was always the better option over diplomacy; where weaponry was employed instead of negotiations, mayhem and carnage was the only means to any kind of resolution.
The 80s were a mess socially and culturally. There was always something; from the crime ridden dirty hole that was the New York, which was reflected in the movie Ghostbusters, and even Trading Places. In the first years of the decade, there was a hostage crisis, and the last years of the decades ushered the beginning of the collapse of the communist. There were many negative events and crises, nonetheless, there was also a national sentiment engraving the nation and a presentiment that made people feel that they had the power to change things, despite the excesses of the ‘me generation` there was Farm Aid, Hands Across America, Artists for Africa all of which were movements by musicians who had a strong conviction that they could change the world and film like Amazing Grace and Chuck captured that inspiration.
