Bionics and Its Benefits
With the passage of time, many revolutions have been brought in the fields of science and technology; various new equipment, products, devices, and apps have been developed successfully to ease our lives. Chemistry, physics, and biology are not only linked to one another but also have associations with technology and engineering. Bionics, also known as biologically inspired engineering, is the systematic application of biology in modern technology and engineering systems. In 1958, the word bionic was coined by Jack E. Steele who called it an essential unit of life and explained that bionics could benefit human beings in many ways. According to Erdmann Ws, the transfer of technology between manufactured objects and varying forms of life has always been needed because some living organisms, such as fauna and flora, are under constant evolutionary pressure and need to become efficient and highly optimized. For this purpose, they are treated with some biological and technological methods, bionics being one of them (Ws 113).
An example is the development of dirt-and-water repellent paints (also known as the coating). Other examples include medical ultrasound imaging, sonar radar and the hulls of boats. It is now clear that bionics benefits us in some ways and that this biological technology has taken much time to develop.
The Development of Bionics
In an article titled Bionics in Engineering Education Considerations, Experiences and Conclusions, Ralf Neurohr and Cristian Dragomirescu mention that bionic technology is a wave of the future and that it has changed the way various patients are treated at the hospital. The name biomimetics was first used by Otto Schmitt in 1950, eight years before Jack E. Steele’s joining. Some experiments were conducted at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio regarding how to improve the technology of bionics. It took scientists many years to understand that biology, technology, and engineering could be linked to one another in order to lay the foundation of bionics (Neurohr & Dragomirescu 92). These three fields of science stunned various experts with their unique features and characteristics. Today, we have access to a large number of bionic and non-bionic prosthetic components that are enough to fulfill the requirements of disabled individuals across the globe.
Benefits of Bionics
It is safe to say that bionics provide a large number of benefits to people with a leg or arm amputation compared to traditional socket prosthesis, which fits over the stump of an amputated arm or leg.
It Helps Replace Missing Body Parts
Scientists have now been able to use bionics for replacing missing parts of the body. This technique or method has benefited many individuals across the globe and is still being used in numerous hospitals in the United States, Canada, and Europe. A prosthetic limb is used to restore any missing body part. It helps the patient to perform his day-to-day activities without any problem or confusion. There are hundreds to thousands of disabled individuals across the United States (Chen & Zhang 5). They find it difficult to eat, walk and do other things of life. With prosthetic technology (or bionics) health experts can treat them and help them enjoy their lives, just like normal individuals. The technology is so compelling that it can help disabled people do everything they had been doing before losing their limbs.
Bionics Provides a Sense of Independence
For a person with two leg amputations, there are two choices: a wheelchair or a prosthetic leg. He will not like to stay stick to a wheelchair for a lifetime since it is heavy to be moved and can make the individual feel bad about his life.
