The types of layout include the product layout, process layout, fixed position layout, and combination layout. Companies, such as IKEA and LEGO, need to have process design and layout to enable them to maximize profits. LEGO works best with a Product Layout where machines are placed according to the way the products are produced. The product layout is preferred when the volume of production is high and the machines are not used for the same products. For LEGO to achieve unique products, it should use a strict product layout for different types of products.
The production volume needs to be enough to ensure that the machines being used to manufacture the products are utilized. LEGO company would benefit a lot from this type of layout since it allows for a smooth flow of production. It uses limited time and material. The product layout is simplified and allows for a better control system. Another advantage is it uses less space during work and temporary storage (Slack et al. 2010, p. 87). The manufacturing cycle is equally shorter and uninterrupted making it easier for unskilled workers to learn how to manage production.
