Describe the basics of the building
The building is called the Trinity church. It is located at Copley Square in Boston Ma. The design of the structure was done from 1838-1886, and it was implemented from 1872-1877. The Trinity Church in the Copley Square was consecrated for worship in 1877. Henry Richardson designed the building. Architect Richardson blended the Romanesque culture with new ideas to develop something new that was uniquely American. The design was referred as the Richardsonian Romanesque architecture. The construction of the Trinity was being completed during the 100th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence which had promised freedom and equality to all the Americans. Describe the building’s function
The people of the King’s church felt the need for a 3rd Episcopal sanctuary in New England was becoming eminent in Boston. The aim was to expand the presence of the King’s church in New England. The church has been regarded as the home of the most significant religious art and 19th-century architecture in the Nation. It is considered by many as a museum that serves as a worship center. It is among the great monuments of US traditional history. The building has been used to reflect the spirit of democracy in America as it is evident in libraries, railroad transport, town halls, homes, and court houses across the U.S. Romanesque from France inspired the design of the Trinity Church. The Seven Lamps of Architecture were not only regarded as moral principles but also artistic guides, and they are all embodied in the design of the building. Richardson incorporated the Romanesque culture with new ideas to generate a new model that was uniquely American. The style was referred as the Richardsonian Romanesque architecture. The church is characterized by massive towers, rough-faced stone, and rounded arches heralding a bold new style. In the interior, a new open format layout that was fitted with beautiful murals, as well as the stained glass supervised by John Lafarge rendered the building an American masterpiece.
The tower would have been taller and more inventive, but structural problems due to the wet soil of Boston's Back Bay necessitated a shorter tower. Though Richardson attributed his inspiration for the building of France’s 11th-century Romanesque churches, he called Trinity a “free rendering” of those sources. The vertical massing, as well as the polychromy, displayed a semblance of the High Victorian Gothic. Richardson introduced the French Romanesque decoration motifs. The building committee developed the roof of the Church in the form of a Greek cross and included a semi-circular cavity to the eastern arm.
