General Topic: Technology versus Face-to-face Communication
Specific Topic: Comparing technology-enabled communication to face-to-face communication
Thesis Statement: Although technology-enabled communication allows for connection across the world, it is more limited than face-to-face communication in terms of social connectedness and enabling workplace productivity.
Introduction: Communication is one of the fields that continue to be significantly impacted by the rapid advancement of technology. While face-to-face communication characterized most communications in the 20th century and before, inventions in the 21st century have seen new ways of communication enabled by technology. As such, there has been a rise in online communication through emails, social media, and blogs, among others. Given the new methods of communication, it is imperative to find out how they compare with face-to-face communication. Although technology-enabled communication allows for connection across the world, it is more limited than face-to-face communication in terms of social connectedness and enabling workplace productivity.
Body:
Main Point #1: Technology-enabled communication allows for connecting with people across the globe.
- Technology has blurred boundaries between countries as people can easily connect with others from other countries (Goman, 2018).
- Technology-based communication facilitates the operations of international businesses through videoconferencing and teleconferencing (Neeley, 2015).
Main Point #2: Face-to-face communication facilitates social connectedness better than technology-enabled communication.
- Technology-enabled communication lower in presence, such as social media and email, is negatively related to social connectedness (Nguyen et al., 2021).
- Face-to-face communications are more meaningful and facilitate the building of emotional closeness (Nguyen et al., 2021).
Main Point #3: Face-to-face communication leads to better workplace productivity than technology-enabled communication.
