Abstract
In the recent past, the multinational that is Sony Corp. has been the target of a wide range of attacks from an even diverse group of online hackers. While the real motivation behind these attacks may never come to the fore, this paper seeks to carry out an analysis of Sony Corp.’s recent predicament and propose a few solutions to help stem any similar attacks in the future, not only with Sony, but also among key industry players, big or small, who may find it necessary to avoid any such compromise.
Introduction
Sony, for several years has been a target for online hackers. The exact time the corporation has been targeted still remains in question. However, in the wake of the spring of 2011, the corporation experienced a series of some of the most extremely compromising security intrusions in the history of any major industry player. The largely successful flagship PlayStation network was tampered with and customer information was reportedly compromised. The PlayStation is Sony’s flagship product with several millions of customers and the extent to which the credit card information and financial data of million of customers had been accessed by the criminals who were largely anonymous is still unknown. Consequently, the Sony Corporation has incurred losses to the tunes of millions and it’s going to take quite sometime before they can regain the long lost momentum in the business. Furthermore, the corporation’s reputation and image has greatly been damaged and as a result, efforts to repair the reputation have been underway for quite some time. It is quite obvious that this damage will prove a hard nut for Sony to control and the efforts needed to bring the corporation back to the front would take several months if not years. The damage, however, is certainly permanent.
Analysis of Damage Caused
With over 77 million records reportedly compromised (Mills, 2011), there cannot be possibly a precise single solution to such a magnanimous and extensive damage. There is no doubt that the attacks were carried out by a number of different hackers at several distinct periods of times and from a number of remote or geographical locations. The motivation behind this, therefore, could possibly be many different reasons. In order to come up with solutions to these recent waves of attacks, a comprehensive analysis of the motivation behind them and their nature ought to be carried out.
Individuals, businesses, and government agencies are all prone to cyber attacks, and Sony is no exception. Computer hackers usually work in groups and sometimes as individuals or independent groups. Sony is therefore predisposed to these very factors that all other companies and individuals are exposed to. It therefore should not come as a surprise that most of these attacks are actually conducted with the intention of showing “who is mightier” in the field of technology: Is it the hackers, who probably are motivated by malice or freedom of speech or is it the tech giants such as Sony Corp? As Boone (509) writes, many hackers carry out their activities just to prove that they can actually do it.
Thought the years, Sony, a leading manufacturer of video, audio and information technology gadgets and products has experienced several hacking incidences. However, it is not until April 2011, when George Hot managed to completely hack the Sony PlayStation 3 security that the story of Sony came to the limelight. In this particular incident, Hot accused Sony of victimizing customers of censoring information that the public ought to have known about. George Hot further stated that this information could be shared for free among its customers and further reduce or suppress corporate greed and help stem their control on users.
The Core Issues
