With increasing vulnerability of computer attacks from viruses, malwares and hackers the issue of computer security is now a course for concern. The ease with which large scale attacks to the computers of large organizations have occurred in the recent past poses computer security concerns. Users of computers may not be fully aware of the potential harmful effects of access to information from third parties or attacks by malicious programs. Consequently, the use of anti virus programs and firewall seek to minimize the risks of computer attacks especially through the internet. My computer uses the Avast anti virus program, which provides regular updates when there is internet connection.
Avast antivirus 8 is the newest version that is available for downloads, and Rubenking (2013) did a review on the software and gave it a score 5.8 out of 10. The main reasons were that that some malwares blocked the installation of the program and in particular Ransonware. However, the main advantage of the software is that one can surf safely, and add web plug ins on a regular basis. Thus, the program takes a lot of time in the diagnosis, remote control support (Rubenkinhg, 2013) and repair process in comparison to other programs. Earlier versions of the software are built upon their user friendly interface (Buenaventura , 2011). The antivirus is good in protecting against attacks, but its ability to protect against antiphising is not impressive.
The McAfee program had impressive results against phishing attacks, and provides links to dangerous websites in addition, to the scanning tool common in all anti virus programs. The software also has the added advantage of detecting emails that are potentially harmful to a PC. However, the installation of the program takes a lot of time when computers are already infected.
