Project Zero
IBM looks at Project Zero as being an incubator used to explore ideas without any links to previous architectures. The Project Zero architecture that processes an HTTP request can be looked at as firing a series of events. Every step accomplishes some logical processing phase and may result to an error or the next step. Advanced programmers may come up with their event handling code. In this project, only the approach and the URI are applied to locate the code to come up with a response. This is achieved through a doXXX method and configuration files naming convention in scripts. Output rendering method selection to come up with the desired return type like XML, HTML or JSON depends on the choice of the programmer. Project Zero offers a library of PHP renders and Groovy which are in a position to handle a number of the typical output formats.
Contrasting Project Zero with JAX-RS
Project Zero competes with JAX-RS API applied in the Jersey project for mindshare development. The outstanding difference between the two is the language support. Although partly written in Java, Project Zero emphasizes on the PHP, languages Groovy and JavaScript. Contrary, JAX-RS is centered completely on Java and relies exclusively on Java annotations. The right of the developer to use Project Zero commercially is tightly controlled by the community-driven commercial development license of the IBM and is tied to the WEbSphere world (Brogden, 2014). The JAX-RS specification on the other hand is freely available and has more than four independent implementations which include the Jersey project open-sources.
