The legacy of slavery continues in systemic inequality, such as residential segregation, disparities in education and employment, the criminalization of poverty, and an enormous racial wealth gap emanating from denial in the accumulation of assets for centuries (Murry et al., 2021). Slavery is no longer legally sanctioned, but its multi-generational effects are deeply embedded in society.
There are some atonement efforts, as some universities have started efforts, including researching ties to slavery, changes to curricula, reparations, and giving preference in admission to the descendants of the enslaved. More concrete investments in Black communities must be advanced to address long-standing equity and opportunity barriers.
