Thoughts After Completing Greenberg's Article About Tenants

Essay Instructions:

How are your thoughts changing after completing Greenberg's article? How do the readings confirm or contradict your ideas?

Here is a sample:

After completing Greenberg's article, I feel more against gentrification due to the large impact it has on low income residents and long-term residents. Gentrification has larger benefits on the high income residents rather than the low income residents. As a neighborhood gets gentrified rent increases very high, landlords seek a chance to "play" the residents, and everything becomes unaffordable for low income residents, and affordable for high income residents. This portrays that New York supports high income residents because they are able to provide more.

Due to this issue there are many homeless and people in poverty in New York. These readings confirm my thoughts on gentrification because they portray how gentrification can affect low income residents negatively. In order for gentrification to be a good "move" it would have to benefit all rather than one party.

Several cities, such as New York, are experiencing a gentrification phenomenon that directly impacts the housing market. This phenomenon is a compound social concern consisting of both pros and cons. After finishing Greenberg's' article, people should not blame gentrification excessively because even if it has notable drawbacks, it is useful in different ways. However, the reading has confirmed that this social issue increases the rate of homelessness and poverty. Gentrification spreads the deteriorating economic segregation in New York. Statistics show that 75% of Homeless people in New York are families with kids, and around 33% of the adults in these families are employed (Greenberg, 2017). The government should work toward finding measures to address this concern before it worsens and becomes uncontrollable.
