Reflection on Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools
As Morris (2016) stated, “We’re in this struggle against racial oppression and patriarchy together, and unless we examine everyone’s experiences, we lose the ability to support our girls and young women as they seek to bounce back from adversity, to be in their best health, to demand the best education, to earn a decent living, to be healthy partners, to help raise strong children who will thrive, and to play an integral part in shaping strong communities and a better world” (p. 15, last para.). This quote emphasizes the need to fully recognize and address the unique challenges faced by Black girls, whose experiences with both racism and patriarchy often limit their opportunities to thrive.
In my opinion, this quote points out that Black girls and young women must be acknowledged for the unique challenges they face from racism and patriarchy. While many people discuss racial oppression and gender inequality, they rarely think about how these two issues affect Black girls. If society does not consider both race and gender, Black girls will not be supported in achieving their goals. They require help to deal with difficulties, maintain good health, attend school, earn a living, build families, and participate in society. It reminds me that justice can only be achieved when people hear the stories of others, especially those who face multiple challenges.
