In-group bias is a tendency to favor people one perceives to be part of one's own group. John's reluctance to respond to the child's question about skin color might be because he is uncomfortable responding, or unfamiliar with making discussion of racial difference, reflecting an in-group bias in which he is more comfortable articulating experiences of his own.Racial socialization is the way adults teach children about race and racial issues. Hence, John’s failure to respond, allows this child to miss a critical moment for an age-appropriate, educational conversation about the diversity of races. This could have been a teaching moment for children on the broad spectrum of skin tones and how beautiful diversity is and it would contribute to a positive atmosphere.Culturally responsive teaching entails validating and integrating students' cultural experience into the curriculum. John could have taken this as a "teachable moment" to educate about different skin tones and cultures, and how an open and accepting space values and respects differences. In the process, he would not only be teaching the students about diversity but also promoting empathy and understanding, and shaping a more inclusive and respectful classroom community. Short Answer 2 Response In the case of Bashira, whose parents are Bangladeshi immigrants, the key concepts of acceptance, race, religion and sex discrimination, and acculturation are showcased. The classroom setting promotes the idea of acceptance for each child regardless of his or her different background from which he/she comes. Shauna noticing that Bashira does not like to wear her headscarf is a reminder of how much is at stake when it comes to creating the kind of environment that enables Bashira to feel comfortable and safe expressing her cultural and religious identity.In the preschool or day care setting, discrimination along religious or gender lines can be subtle. Bashira's hesitance to wear her headscarf may be originating from differences and/or questions she is receiving from her peers. To that extent, educational awareness of religious and cultural practice could be necessary to avoid discrimination. It is here, that Shauna has the potential to make a difference, through fostering dialogue where people can learn to appreciate diversity and promote understanding.Acculturation is the adaptation to a new culture without losing one's original culture. Shauna's presence is essential in fostering Bashira's journey. Supporting conversations that respect Bashira’s culture and enable peers to recognize and value cultural differences allows Shauna to build a more inclusive and supportive classroom.
