Assignment Details Why is it so important to know what one thinks about truth? The idea of what truth is (or how to obtain truth) may vary from person to person. To further complicate the issue, there is much debate about what kinds of things can be true. For example, are theories, beliefs, and opinions things that can be true? This assignment will help you further explore these concepts. To illustrate with an example – the problem is not: Is it true that there is extraterrestrial life? The problem is: What does it mean to say that it is true that there is extraterrestrial life? Astrobiologists study the former problem; philosophers, the latter. (Dowden & Swartz, n.d.) Instructions: 1. Read the following resources. Refer to at least 1 of them in your essay (required). Chapter 3: The Pursuit of Truth Three Theories of Truth (video) Three Different Theories of Truth Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy Opening paragraph (1 paragraph) What is the main idea of your essay and the importance of the topic? In other words, what’s so good about seeking truth? How does truth relate to our everyday activities and how we interact with the real world? Three theories of truth (4 paragraphs) Write a paragraph for each of the three competing theories of truth (correspondence theory, coherence theory, and pragmatic theory). First, explain each theory in your own words. Then, provide an example of each theory in real life. This example should be your own creation where you personally see this at work in real life. Some theories assume that truth is absolute (such as the correspondence theory), whereas others see truth more from a relative or subjective viewpoint (pragmatic Theory). Explain your view on this issue: Are you more an “absolutist” or more a “relativist”? Why? Objection to your chosen theory (2 paragraphs) Choose 1 theory that you find most interesting, and explain 1 objection to your chosen theory. Assignment about the Pursuit of Truth Name Institution Course Instructor Date Assignment about the Pursuit of Truth Introduction According to Dowden and Swartz (n.d.), truth refers to showing or demonstrating clarity concerning whatever a person says when they state a specific claim is true. Philosophers have developed various theories of truth to explain the meaning of truth. Embracing truth among individuals and across societies is increasingly beneficial since it helps humans solve real-world problems more openly and efficiently. It connects people who interact, establish long-term relationships, exchange ideas, and collaborate on issues affecting them. Truth plays an inevitable role in human-based daily engagements. Most importantly, it is a concept that fosters openness required for better mutual understanding among individuals as they participate in their pursuits daily. Regarding truth, humans can positively impact everything connected to the environment and the world at large. The essay discusses correspondence, coherence, pragmatic theories explaining the truth, my view on absolutism and relativism, and an objection to the coherence theory. Three Theories of Truth The correspondence theory is closely connected to reality. It argues that a belief, situation, or something is only true if it agrees with or depicts something else that exists on the planet (Prof G, 2020). I have experienced many life situations that demonstrated the theory. For example, a year ago, I attended a leadership training program that required everyone to attend classes, learn key concepts, interact with others, and work hard to complete the program successfully. At the end of the learning experience, we were to do a certification examination. The instructor specified that the exam would begin at exactly 8 am. Everyone was at the venue earlier, and the examination commenced at 8 am. The coincidence between the time the instructor specified and the time the exam started demonstrates the correspondence theory of truth.
