Each of us has a leadership style and appreciative living approaches we use frequently. Yet, if we don’t know ourselves as leaders, we shouldn’t expect others to know us as leaders. Leaders must focus on their ability to be mindful, self-aware, and creative. We must use our awareness to learn valuable lessons and make changes to improve.
Referencing the module readings and presentations, discuss various approaches to getting to know yourself as a leader. Develop an original response to the following question:
What approaches do you use to become more mindful of others and self-aware in the academic, personal, and professional areas of your life?

Life experiences can be transformational but may not contribute to self-awareness. Introspection can be useful in generating meaningful understanding and mindfulness. Consciousness development is a contributor to introspection. Activities such as self-monitoring and self-detection can help answer questions such as how one feels about oneself. It can also draw out one's beliefs and values; how one can identify the things that matter most, and how the points noted formulate questions relevant to the steps needed to acquire answers through appreciative inquiry. It is important to note that introspection, if not applied correctly, can lead to rumination, which is the process of overthinking or having repetitive thoughts that may not arrive at a solution.
Getting to know oneself may not be as easy as it seems. Journaling can be especially useful in capturing and channeling key events into action. Nanwani applies events and context along with observations to derive meaningfulness. Observations signal mindfulness which contributes to self-awareness. That is where the What, So What, Now What activities can factor in. Recording narratives relevant to one's personal and professional being is important. It is a healthy endeavor for a variety of reasons, but the secret is in doing it. What you intend to do, what you do, and the outcome contribute to the cyclical stages of one's life journey.
So why does knowing oneself matter? An article in Psychcentral.com entitled How to Know Yourself Better discusses "response-ability," which implies responding to what life throws at you as compared to reacting to it. Introspection limits negative emotions or situations thereby increasing the likelihood of thoughtful outcomes. Some approaches can include journaling, meditating, practicing self-compassion, detailing frustrations, and identifying lessons as opportunities. Additionally, mindfulness and its contribution to reflective practices and action learning. It enhances reflection because one becomes more present through applied mindfulness.

In my development as a leader, I've come to realize the importance of self-awareness and mindfulness, both in personal and professional spheres. This understanding aligns with the concepts presented in the module readings and presentations, which emphasize that effective leadership stems from a deep understanding of oneself (Nanwani, 2022). To enhance my self-awareness, I actively engage in learning about other cultures and perspectives, an approach that's integral to my role as a multilingual specialist. This not only enriches my cultural competence but also allows me to view problems through various lenses. By integrating this understanding into my leadership style, I am able to address challenges with a more informed and considerate approach, taking into account the potential impact of cultural differences on team interactions and decision-making.
Another strategy I employ is guided by the principles outlined in the book "The Four Agreements" by Don Miguel Ruiz. This book has been a beacon in my personal growth and leadership journey. The agreements, be impeccable with your word, don't take anything personally, don't make assumptions, and always do your best, have helped me develop a more mindful approach to both my personal and professional interactions (Ruiz, 1997). For example, by striving to be impeccable with my word, I foster transparent and honest communication with my team, building trust and reliability. Not taking things personally allows me to approach feedback and challenges without ego, focusing instead on growth and solutions. This mindset has been pivotal in my ability to lead effectively, ensuring I remain open, adaptable, and responsive to the needs of those around me.
Lastly, collaboration has been a cornerstone of my leadership style. Regularly engaging in discussions and problem-solving sessions with colleagues provides diverse perspectives that I might not have considered independently. This collaborative approach is supported by the notion that collective intelligence surpasses individual insight (Woolley et al., 2010). By valuing the input and viewpoints of my colleagues, I not only foster a sense of community and respect but also arrive at more comprehensive and inclusive solutions. This method has proven especially effective in academic and professional settings, where complex issues often require multifaceted approaches. By embracing these strategies, I continually evolve as a leader, becoming more mindful and self-aware in all aspects of my life.
