Essay Instructions:
Students must write at least 2 pages double-spaced to receive full credit. Formatting should follow standard rules: 12-inch Times New Roman font, 1-inch margins on all sides, double spacing. No title necessary. Simply write your name at the top of the page. During this exercise, students should refer to material from week #1 about “the sociological imagination” to begin thinking/writing sociologically. For this short paper, students must place their own life experiences within sociological context. Students must apply at least ONE class concept to explain an aspect of their personal background or present situation sociologically. This will involve linking personal experiences to wider social structures, norms, and/or events. For example, you might select the concept of intersectionality from this class’s unit on identity to describe how a personal experience was specifically shaped by structural factors. This assignment is meant for students to think critically about course material and apply readings/lecture topics to relatable examples. As such, I will be grading this assignment for accuracy in students’ ability to describe their selected concepts, as well as the degree to which they apply those concepts to a concrete example. I will be available to hear students’ paper ideas via email in the weeks prior to its due date in order to help ensure accuracy and detail.

Wright Mills. Mills wrote, "To be effective, sociology must make a connection between the individual and the social. It must allow the individual to see the larger social context in which his or her life is lived, and in this way give both understanding and meaning to personal experiences" (Wright Mills, 1959). Such assertion allows individuals to perceive personal experiences in the context of larger social structures. By applying Mills’ viewpoint, I can better comprehend how my background and current situation are influenced by wider societal factors. For this assignment, I will stress the idea of intersectionality to describe how my experience in a low-income family has been shaped by different structural factors. The concept of intersectionality, as established by Kimberlé Crenshaw, an American critical legal race scholar, refers to the “interconnected nature of social categorizations, including class, race, and gender, regarded as developing overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage” (Al-Faham et al., 2019).
