In this study, a random sample of 100 African American women with HIV/AIDS, from an HIV clinic of a large, metropolitan public hospital, were asked about their disclosure (and non-disclosure) of their HIV/AIDS status in five key life domains: family (including all children), intimate partners, friends and, if applicable, religious community, and substance abuse treatment setting. About 70% of the women had disclosed to their family member targets (mother, father, sister, brother, and adult relative) as well as their closest friend and their most recent intimate partner. Women disclosed their HIV status to fewer people in the religious setting (15 of 53 religious leaders, 34%; 7 of 52 religious congregations, 15%), although 97% of women had disclosed to their substance abuse treatment counselor.
