Essay Instructions:

Please write a page for each discussion topic. Make sure you understand the physics involved. Please keep them separate Discussion 12: Visit the following website: http://www(dot)oceanmammalinst(dot)org/songs.html Listen to the whales' songs and explain the effects of sound waves in the air and water by bringing examples with formulae. Discuss the possible changes of whales' songs as a result of temperature, wave speeds, and etc. How could you distinguish the whales' songs from other songs? Discussion 13: Visit the following website: http://www(dot)cbsnews(dot)com/stories/2006/11/28/eveningnews/main2213458.shtml Read about the current predicament of dead-sea. Discuss the features of dead-sea in terms of buoyancy, density, and general fluid mechanics knowledge. If you were to reverse the properties of dead-sea, what could you do?

Sound is basically a disturbance in pressure which tends to travel only through mediums by the virtual of particle interaction at the molecular level. Interestingly, sound cannot exist if there is not a medium that it can rely on to move one source to the receiver. Depending on the particulate properties of the medium in question will travel faster or slower. At the core of the speed of sound in any given medium, is the frequency of the waves and the wavelength.
Listening to the whale songs, there is variation in the wavelength and the frequency as well. When sound is released from the source, the particles nearest to the source vibrate and in turn pass on the energy to the neighboring particles to the receiver. The frequency of loud sound is high and the wavelengths tend to be shorter. In water, the molecules are closer together than they are in the air. This means that the speed of the particle vibration is much faster (Oceanmammalinst.org, 2014). As a result, sound is going to travel much faster in water than in the air. On the same note, sound will travel much faster in solid such as steel than in the water.
When the temperature rises, the particles vibrate much faster in place than when the medium is cold. This means that, if the temperature of the water is increased, the sound of the whale songs will be louder relative to the temperature change. At the same time of the speed of the wave increased, the sound will be much faster. The whale songs are rather unique; this is due to the fact that they tend to have both high frequencies and low frequencies. When they want to send their message to longer distances through the water, they use the longer wave lengths and shorter frequencies. This would explain the majority of t...
