Some examples include physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, witnessing spousal abuse, trauma due to natural disasters, the death of a close family member or sibling, and living with substance abuse or mental health disorders in the home (Saunders & Adams, 2014). Similarly, bullying, severe accidents, and community violence also fall under serious traumatic events. Diagnosing trauma during middle childhood is important because the development stage is rather sensitive.
