Read the article, Comparative Civil Education Research: What We Know and What We Need to Know, by Hahn (2010), which is required reading for this week. Compare and contrast civic education in the United States and at least two of the other countries or regions discussed in the article. Include methods of civic education and the impact that these methods have on students’ political engagement. How is civic education used as a means of political socialization?
Hahn (2010), highlighted that citizen education researchers were mostly from countries that had experienced European enlightenment, and in the article the researcher reviews the field of comparative civic education from the author’s own research and other global networks.
In the US students are encouraged to explore diverse political topics in an open environment in the spirit of democracy, and this increases their engagement with politics and improves their civic knowledge and sense of civic duty (Hohn, 2010).
Service learning and engaging the local community also provide opportunity in civic commitment to understand future expectations, but such opportunities are often absent for the marginalized, minority, immigrant and low income students (Hahn, 2010).
