The doctrine that ‘The end justifies the means’ has for long been used in various circumstances. It has been particularly used in the political arena, although it borrows much from its philosophical undertone. It was a phrase advocated so much by Niccollo Machiavelli, who believed that violence is necessary in state building. He asserted that rival political forces and military influence should and can be nullified through the enactment of particular legislations. Additionally, that the legal institutions should also be maximized to ensure the same. In some instances, the doctrine can prove very effective and applicable, while in others, the opposite is the case. If the end goals and the methods to get there are indeed noble, then the doctrine can be embraced. However, if either of the two isn’t noble, the doctrine should be avoided. It is as a result of this that I believe the doctrine should be used conditionally.
It is said that a man is an end to himself (Rand, 2014). This simply means that one has to struggle for his own survival. This means that there is more reason for the person to sacrifice for himself for the benefit of his own life, but not to make others sacrifice for him, for his own benefit. The ultimate aim of his existence is to achieve satisfaction and happiness that comes with it. For example, the supporters of Machiavelli could point out to the fact that the U.S were indeed justified to drop the atomic bomb in Japan, for the sake of saving lives. It is an ironic bit, since more lives were destroyed (D’amato, 2012).
