You will need approval from the instructor; contact me by email, showing the title of the source, the name(s) of the author(s), publishing information and copyright date. Submit to the instructor the information regarding your prospective source prior to beginning to write your Paper.
Newspapers and magazines such as Psychology Today are not acceptable sources for your Paper. An exception is Scientific American Mind, which contains articles written by professionals in the field, and are based on research. Book reviews, article reviews, interviews, and internet articles are not acceptable as sources for your paper; you must use full articles (from professional journals), or chapters from a book.

Part One
Childhood obesity is a rising, global health concern. Statistics have tripled in a span of 40 years and it can be attributed to the changing food environments, sedentary lifestyle, increased screen-based activities, socioeconomic status and many more.
Obesity is determined through Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI is computed as an individual’s weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters. Obesity has a BMI value of 30 and above while overweight is 25-29. For children below five years old, overweight and obesity are defined as BMI percentiles using WHO Growth Standards Median.
While obesity leads to various chronic health diseases, several studies also show its psychological consequences. In early childhood, the depicted self-concept had inaccuracies because their cognitive aspect is not yet fully developed. At their young age, they do not mind comparing themselves among their peers. However as they grow, they become more aware of the social discrimination experienced with obesity that could make an impact on their psychological wellbeing. In this regard, this paper will focus on the research about association of overweight and obesity with psychological problems among school children grades two to four conducted by Canals-Sans, et al. last 2018. The study utilized Child Behavior Checklist 6-18, as one of their research instruments, wherein the parents rated their children on a 113- item checklist of behavioral problems that include: anxious/depressed, withdrawn/depressed, somatic complaints, social problems, rule-breaking behavior and aggressive behavior. Below are some of its significant results:
First, only the internalizing problems were found to have significant relationship to the overweight and obese children group. Internalizing problems result from excessive control of emotions and cognitive states as a person hides his true feelings. Internalizing problems include depression, anxiety, social withdrawal and somatic problems. Studies correlated these findings with the lack of persistence on doing self-care among obese children. Researchers added that these kids were more likely to have impulsive eating behaviors and inactive lifestyle with the advent of gadgets. It was also revealed that these children have low self-esteem, feelings of guilt and personal failure.
Among the internalizing problems, the focused study demonstrated higher prevalence on depression and social withdrawal. According to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition (DSM-5), a major depressive episode is characterized by at least five of the following symptoms: depressed or irritable mood, loss of interest, failure to meet expected weight, sleeping disturbances, agitation, loss of energy, feelings of worthlessness, difficulty in concentrating and suicidal thoughts, for a period of at least two weeks.
