A leader with reflective leadership practice can understand their strengths and weaknesses and make informed decisions that are mindful of the well-being of others. Further, the leaders can identify areas in need of improvement, cultivate a culture of collaboration and trust, and encourage open communication (Kelm, 2006). In this paper, we shall look at Kelm’s five emergent principles of appreciative inquiry (AI) and discuss their role in individual leadership practice reflection in the context of appreciative living (AL).
The first principle is simultaneity which emphasizes how processes and outcomes connect. Hence actions and results are intricately linked to each other in a continuous and simultaneous form. In reflective leadership, individual actions decisions, and impact on the organization are continuously and thoughtfully examined. The dynamic relationships between various aspects of leadership such as decision-making and communication are understood.
