Children under five could develop malnutrition since they could become picky eaters when their families dislike some food groups. However, human service professionals can use family system theory in such cases. The theory would analyze the causative factors that make the children picky eaters because it is family-centered (Aubel et al., 2021). In addition, the theory would provide guidance when analyzing the maternal causative features of malnutrition in children. For instance, poor nutrition during pregnancy causes poor intrauterine growth (Abessa et al., 2019). Consequently, it could contribute to malnutrition among children under five.
Nevertheless, the family system theory supports families with suitable nutrition interventions to curb malnutrition among children under five. Consequently, families can prevent malnutrition among children under five since the young ones would enjoy meal times and eat more from various food groups in the company of their loved ones. Furthermore, the theory trains parents on appropriate behaviors that curb malnutrition among children under five. It also encourages families to use differential reinforcement to promote positive behaviors (Thomas et al., 2018). For example, parents can reward their children for every completed meal to encourage the intake of nutritious foods. They can also give their children incentives to motivate them to consume novel foods that boost their nutritional status. Consequently, the positive behaviors would curb malnutrition among children since they would embrace healthy eating habits that fulfil their nutrition needs.
