Essay Instructions:
Consider a time you failed to actively listen to someone, or felt someone wasn’t actively listening to you. Then consider a situation in which you actively listened during a conversation, or felt that someone was actively listening to you. If you are unable to recall an example, then practice active listening now with a co-worker, schoolmate, friend, or family member! Briefly describe both scenarios. For the example in which you or the other party failed to actively listen, explain what you/the other party did or failed to do that demonstrated a lack of effective listening. How did the it impact the conversation or outcome? For the example in which you or the other party did effectively listen, what did you/the other party do or refrained from doing that demonstrated active listening? How did it impact the conversation or outcome? Finally, explain what impact interrupting has on effective listening. How does it impact the conversation? How can it impact an outcome? Active Listening Student’s Name Institutional Affiliation Active Listening Scenario 1: Lack of Active Listening I have been in a situation in which I was not listening actively to a friend who was in a problem and my behaviour led to a bad ending to that interaction. My friend had lost his job and he was willing to share the challenge that he was facing. At the same time, I had a school project with a short deadline. While I wanted to listen to my friend’s problem, I kept thinking about the project and how it would affect my grades should I fail to submit it in time. Throughout the engagement, I nodded occasionally to a few points. However, I did not get the whole information, failed to empathize with the situation, and did not have any follow-up questions to demonstrate my lack of listening. The engagement ended badly as we both disagreed ultimately. My failure to listen impacted the outcome negatively because my friend did not completely inform me. Also, I responded to a person’s openness with indifference, which hurt our relationship. I believe that my friend...
