“Can Collaborative Learning Improve the Effectiveness of Worked Examples in Learning Mathematics?” portrays how collaborative learning and worked examples can facilitate learning effectiveness. Researchers conducted two experiments with Grade-seven Indonesian students (Retnowati, Ayres, & Sweller, 2017). They compared the ability of participants in solving algebra problems individually or collaboratively. Endah Retnowati, John Sweller, and Paul Ayres found out that learning from problem-solving through collaboration was better than individual learning. Worked examples were effective when students were learning how to solve complex problems. As such, researchers concluded that collaboration is beneficial for students when solving problems but can be counterproductive when using worked examples.
Retnowati and her colleagues studied various scholars to support the findings obtained from their experiments.
