Theories and theorists in psychopathology Student Name Institution Course Professor Date Theories and theorists in psychopathology Summary Psychopathology Psychopathology is the scientific study of the mechanisms, symptoms, and causation of mental disorders, explaining that it examines the myriad combination of biological, psychological, and social forces that lead to and shape such conditions (American Psychiatric Association, 2020). The goal of the field is to establish the mechanisms behind mental disorders, thereby providing effective solutions that would give rise to improved mental health. Psychopathology does not simply deal with the categorization of conditions but also with the sufferings of such conditions in the lives of individuals, such as in areas of their emotional, cognitive, and behavioral performances (American Psychiatric Association, 2020). Main Ideas of Psychopathology Biopsychosocial Model The biopsychosocial model explains that mental disorders are the result of the combination of biological aspects, psychological aspects, and social aspects, proposed by Engel (Bolton & Gillet, 2019). This holistic approach underlines the idea that mental health cannot be explained by either a biological or a psychological approach; instead, a holistic view that takes into account the individual's environment, along with their relationships and past experiences, must be considered (Bolton & Gillet, 2019). The model has made an enormous contribution to current clinical mental health by influencing practitioners to take a holistic approach when evaluating and treating patients.
