Correctional Psychology is an important branch of forensic psychology with several professional functions that directly influence the operations of prisons, jails, and juvenile justice institutions. Two of the most renowned worlds are (1) correctional psychologists in adult institutions and (2) psychologists in juvenile justice. Both call on specific skills and training required, and the need to be ethically aware, yet both demonstrate the fundamental role of psychology in corrections.
Psychologists in adult correctional settings are most frequently assessor/treatment experts. They make assessments of suicide risk, competency, and mental disorders as well as provide therapy to the inmates with severe psychological demands (Bartol & Bartol, 2022, ch. 12). Much of their work complements or mixes with prison administration, guards, and medical personnel.
