The assignment requires you to write up a case study on your own training needs analysis. This assignment offers you an opportunity to introspectively examine your current competencies, identify areas of growth, and set actionable, measurable learning goals.
Learning Goals:
Within this training needs analysis, you are tasked with developing three distinct learning goals. These goals should be specific, relevant, and aligned with your broader aspirations. But identifying goals is only the starting point; it's the journey towards achieving them that often provides the most valuable lessons.
Stretch Projects:
Enter the concept of the 'Stretch Project'. A stretch project is an assignment or task taken up voluntarily, which lies outside of your current skill set or comfort zone. It's designed to challenge you, pushing you beyond your current capabilities and compelling you to adapt, learn, and grow. Such projects might feel daunting initially, but they're instrumental in driving rapid skill acquisition and promoting a growth mindset. Historical: Attachment Theory
Learning theories are significant for educationists and psychologists to assist learners through diverse practices and styles. Historically, the ‘attachment theory’ is one of the popular frameworks in learning psychology. Attachment theory explains the relationship journey of a parent, caregiver, or mentor, developing through emotional exchanges and social security (Thompson et al., 2022). Attachment theory discusses that parents and mentors must resonate with a child’s emotions and offer safety and comfort through actions. For instance, children who receive adequate attention from parents have stronger bonds and fewer emotional disruptions than those experiencing limited social connections with family members or acquaintances (Katz & Katz, 2022).
According to Bosmans (2022), John Bowlby introduced the attachment theory in the 20th century to educate parents and social actors about emotional intervention with children in early phases. Bowlby argued that children have lasting memories of emotional responses from parents and caregivers (van der Horst, 2024). As a result, parents must demonstrate resonance and understanding through relevant actions, such as attention, compassion, and active listening, to connect with children during the early phase. Attachment theory gained popularity in the post-World War II (WWII) era, and the European and North American societies raised voices about orphans and displaced children in the aftermath (van der Horst, 2024). The post-war era also introduced cultural transformation in the West as families shifted to a nuclear structure for independence and enhanced maternal roles (Coard, 2021).
Nonetheless, attachment theory is a significant framework in learning psychology. The theory educates modern teachers and parents about a child’s emotional and physical resilience to environmental pressures. Emotional bonds, social safety, psychological security, and continuity are core principles of attachment theory that influence child-parent relationships at various stages (Coard, 2021). The principles are essential for children to progress in educational and family settings, having meaningful values.
Contemporary: Social Cognitive Theory (SCT)
‘Social Cognitive Theory (SCT)’ is a modern approach in learning psychology for teachers and students. Albert Bandura introduced SCT by defining three principles, namely observation, imitation, and modeling. Bandura explained that learners observe their environment and the actions of others to adopt behavioral responses. However, observations should be competent, relevant, and reinforcing for individuals to memorize actions (Wang et al., 2022). The theory also discusses the self-efficacy attribute, enabling learners to believe in core competencies and abilities to overcome challenges. Self-efficacy facilitates cognitive resilience among learners, allowing them to exhibit responsiveness and persistence in diverse situations (Almulla & Al-Rahmi, 2023).
Nonetheless, SCT is a relevant theoretical framework in learning psychology, connecting with modern academic settings. According to Urhahne and Wijnia (2023), the contemporary educational landscape observed digital transformation and emergence. The COVID-19 outbreak introduced a virtual learning culture in classrooms through digital platforms and e-learning tools (Urhahne & Wijnia, 2023). Students utilize interactive modules and simulations to connect with an immersive learning experience. Teachers use digital classroom tools to facilitate students' accessible and convenient learning. As a result, students resonate with SCT principles through observation, imitation, and modeling for strengthening learning outcomes (Zhang, 2025).
Khan et al. (2023) argued that the contemporary educational landscape experienced a sociocultural shift in learning outcomes. The authors explained that teachers rely on peer monitoring and collaborative learning in classroom settings for inclusivity and multicultural diversity. As a result, modern teachers utilize ‘YouTube’ and other virtual platforms to help learners through virtual support (Khan et al., 2023). Tang et al. (2023) discussed that content-driven platforms like ‘Khan Academy’ empowered students to access learning material, learn through tutorial observations, and expand knowledge on diverse subjects. Hence, SCT is a contemporary framework to support learners and teachers in a digital learning environment.
PART B: Educational Interventions – Applying the Attachment Theory in Online Learning
Online education and virtual classrooms are becoming a global phenomenon in learning psychology. The phenomenon is new to students, parents, and teachers in balancing the relationships and learning outcomes (Ong & Quek, 2023). Online learning increased interpersonal and physical distances between teachers and students in exercise peer-focused monitoring for social and emotional robustness. As a result, the interactions in virtual classrooms became unreal and less engaging for individuals (Ong & Quek, 2023).
Ye et al. (2021) explained that online learning can optimize relationship outcomes and increase classroom realism in virtual settings by applying attachment theory principles. The authors discussed that post-pandemic conditions reduced social protection and emotional bonds between teachers and students (Ye et al., 2021). Teachers place more emphasis on digital modules and platforms to increase knowledge. However, the process compromises psychological emotions and cognitive engagement among students while connecting with teachers for social support (Ye et al., 2021).
Hence, attachment theory integration in online learning environments (OLEs) is a robust intervention for students and teachers to reduce interactive gaps and enhance social presence. Attachment theory principles improve social connections, emotional safety, and trust in peer relationships for continuous engagement (Miao et al., 2022). This online intervention will apply Bowlby’s theoretical framework in contemporary settings to optimize learning outcomes for students.
Aligning with the Theoretical Principles
According to Coard (2021), emotional bonds, social safety, psychological security, and continuity are core principles of attachment theory to strengthen teacher-student relationships in the learning environment. As a result, this intervention will capitalize on core principles to optimize students’ engagement in virtual classrooms and encourage teachers to reduce interaction gaps for continuous growth.
According to Zhang et al. (2022), online learning exposes learners to smartphone addiction, thereby increasing the distance between teachers and students. Hence, this intervention will focus on responsive care delivery by teachers through consistent communication via virtual modules, engaging students with learning materials using smartphones. The strategy will mitigate distractions and increase teacher-student interpersonal exchanges to foster emotional bonds in online classrooms.
Furthermore, Lapidot-Lefler and Israeli (2024) argued that online classrooms lack social safety for students due to weak monitoring and individual recognition. As a result, this intervention will utilize the attachment theory principle by personalizing learning modules based on students’ needs. The intervention will integrate continuous performance tracking mechanisms and share individual feedback to increase social security through data-driven and two-way communication. Teachers will continue implementing theoretical principles through actions to achieve meaningfulness in OLEs.

The implementation of attachment theory in online learning intervention anticipates the following outcomes for teachers and students:
* Emotional Stability and Wellness: According to Wan et al. (2023), attachment theory nourishes an emotional foundation to increase lifestyle wellness. Students experience various cognitive stressors such as dysfunctional family structure, parental malpractices, academic underperformance, and peer pressures. As a result, attachment theory improves stability and psychological resilience among students to enjoy wellness in learning outcomes and lifestyle choices.
* Classroom Engagement: According to Bond and Bergdahl (2023), online culture reduced classroom engagement due to a lack of individual recognition and weak monitoring mechanisms. Hence, attachment theory will enable teachers to optimize learning outcomes for students by increasing interpersonal communication and continuous performance tracking.
